The new Melbourne Convention Centre

New Melbourne Convention Centre secures Melbourne as business events capital

The new 5,000-seat Melbourne Convention Centre on the banks of Melbourne's Yarra River is securing the city's place as a global meetings capital.

The centre is already helping MCVB win more event business for Melbourne, 18 large international events are booked worth $293 million to Victoria. Many more bids are underway.

The centre will be fully integrated with the existing Melbourne Exhibition Centre to become Australia's largest combined convention and exhibition facility.

The plenary hall will give unobstructed views for all delegates, a world first for a 5,000-seat auditorium. It can be divided for smaller conventions into three self-contained, acoustically-separate plenary halls, one with capacity for 2,500 and two with 1,500 delegate capacity.

The centre is the first convention centre in Australia to achieve a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating, the highest possible under the Green Building Council of Australia's rating system.

Key features of the centre:

  • a grand ballroom/banquet hall
  • 18-metre high glass wall façade fronting the Yarra River
  • 32 meeting rooms of various sizes
  • four entry points to foyer

Key formats/capacity:

  • plenary hall, theatre style – 5,000 people
  • ground floor, cocktail function – 8,400 guests
  • grand ballroom – 1,500 seated guests

The state government is contributing $370 million to the construction of the centre and the Melbourne City Council will also invest $43 million. The development is being delivered in partnership with a consortium lead by Plenary Group.
