Melbourne, the Events Capital of Australia

Welcome to Melbourne, Australia, our home.

Melbourne is set around the shores of Port Phillip Bay. The city is laid out in a large rectangular grid on the northern banks of the Yarra River and is renowned for its lovely gardens, wide boulevards, performing arts, museums and galleries, festival and events.

Melbourne’s expertise in staging major events was highlighted recently through its hosting of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. For 12 days in March, Melbourne’s infrastructure and event venues were at full capacity. The games attracted 90,000 international and interstate visitors, as well as 4500 athletes from 71 nations and 1500 team officials. The Games, and other major events held regularly in Melbourne such as the Spring Racing Carnival, Melbourne International Arts Festival, Australian Open Tennis Championships, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and Australian International Airshow, help place Melbourne on the global stage as a major events city.

5,000-seat 6 Star Green Star Rated Convention Centre Opening In 2009

The centre is already a global leader, with a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating the highest possible under the Green Building Council of Australian's rating system.

In another world first, the 5,000 seat plenary hall will offer unobstructed views for every delegate and can be easily divided into three separate auditoriums.

The centre will be fully integrated with the Melbourne Exhibition Centre to become the largest facility of its kind in Australia.

The new Melbourne Convention Centre will open for business in 2009.

Melbourne - an Exciting City to Explore

Visitors will find that Melbourne is an exciting city to explore. Modern architecture and design is juxtaposed with heritage buildings reflecting Australia’s cultural history. But beneath the city’s impressive façade, lies the true heart and soul of the city; laneways which snake the city grid to reveal cafes and bars, fashion houses, boutiques, innovative cuisine, galleries, theatres and museums. Within an hour’s drive of the city visitors can enjoy some of Australia’s most spectacular coastlines, wildlife reserves, wineries, temperate rainforests, surf beaches and historic townships.
